The first of three spacewalks planned for January begins Wednesday to continue upgrading International Space Station power systems and a cosmic ray detector. While the spacewalkers ready their suits and tools, the rest of the Expedition 61 crew is on science and maintenance duty today.

NASA Flight Engineer Jessica Meir is partnering for a second time with fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch for a pair of spacewalks set for tomorrow and Jan. 20. The duo is finalizing preparations for the two six-and-a-half hour spacewalks to replace batteries that store and distribute solar power. They will set their U.S. spacesuits to internal power at 6:50 a.m. and translate out to the Port-6 truss structure. Once there they swap out old nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries. NASA TV begins its live coverage Wednesday at 5:30 a.m. EST.

A third spacewalk is planned for Jan. 25 with NASA Flight Engineer Andrew Morgan and Commander Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency). They will finish the thermal repair work on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer they began last year.

Meanwhile, Morgan and Parmitano were on science duty today. The astronauts took turns safely burning fabric and acrylic samples to help scientists understand how flames spread in space. Results may inform the design of fire safety products and procedures on Earth and in space. The two crewmates also drew their blood samples, spinning them in a centrifuge for later analysis.

She and fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch (out of frame) ventured into the vacuum of space for seven hours and 17 minutes to swap a failed battery charge-discharge unit (BCDU) with a spare during the first all-woman spacewalk. Cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov spent the day servicing Russian life support equipment. On the science schedule, cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka continued setting up and testing hardware that will observe the Earth’s mesosphere at different wavelengths.

The Top 100 Drummers of All Time

Neil Peart of Rush, image from YouTube

Here is a repost of a list originally put up on the DMDB Facebook page on August 23, 2010, and then revised on January 22, 2011. 30 best-of lists (see resources at the bottom of the page) were aggregated to create this one. As tends to be the case with these lists, it heavily slants toward rock drummers, so while far from flawless, the aggregate approach to creating this list should assure that this is a more representative list than any other out there. Happy Birthday Kate & January Engagements Announced

Happy Birthday Kate! The Duchess of Cambridge is celebrating her 38th birthday at Kensington Palace today (She was spotted driving earlier today, click here to see photos). The Duchess privately celebrated with family and a group of close friends at Anmer Hall over the weekend before returning to London for George and Charlotte's return to Thomas's Battersea on Tuesday. To mark the occasion, a new image, taken by one of the Cambridges favourite photographers, Matt Porteous was shared.

It's a lovely photo and has a similar feel to several of the shots we saw of Kate at RHS Chelsea before Back To Nature opened to the public. Judging by Kate's outfit, it's possible it was taken the same time as the Cambridges 2018 Christmas card at Anmer Hall.

Kate is wearing her Fjallraven Forest Green Sweater and (it appears) Asprey Oak leaf earrings.

Also today, The Palace announced several engagements for January beginning with a packed day in Bradford on Wednesday 15 January.

More on the itinerary:

'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Bradford on Wednesday 15th January to visit a number of projects which support the community and promote cohesion within it, in one of the UK’s most diverse cities. They will then join a session involving groups supported by Better Start Bradford.
Their Royal Highnesses will first visit City Hall in Bradford’s Centenary Square to join a group of young people from across the community to hear about life in Bradford. The Duke and Duchess will then meet representatives from local employers and businesses who are helping young people into employment. Before departing Centenary Square, Their Royal Highnesses will have the opportunity to meet members of the public gathered outside City Hall.
The Duke and Duchess will visit one of Bradford’s Khidmat Centres, whose main focus is to help the most vulnerable members of the community from minority ethnic backgrounds. On arrival, Their Royal Highnesses will hear about the activities and workshops offered at the centre, and the organisations that they support.
The Duke and Duchess will then join a session involving groups supported by Better Start Bradford, which delivers over 20 projects to pregnant women and families with children under the age of 4. Their Royal Highnesses will meet families from the ‘Older Yet Wiser’ project, a unique and innovative workshop series for grandparents who have child-caring responsibilities for their grandchildren. Participants in the workshop are given tools to enhance their relationship with their grandchildren whilst receiving up-to-date information on raising children in the 21st century.
The Duchess’s longstanding work on the early years has highlighted the importance of supporting children and families during this seminal period of their lives, and the importance of all members of society in raising children.
Finally, The Duke and Duchess will join a workshop run by Near Neighbours, an organisation which brings people together in communities across the UK that are religiously and ethnically diverse, so that they can get to know each other better, build relationships of trust, and collaborate together on initiatives that improve the local community that they live in.'

Additionally on Monday, 20 January, William and Kate will a host a reception at Buckingham Palace on behalf of the Queen to mark the UK-Africa summit. The summit will bring together heads of state and government and senior representatives from African countries, key multilateral agencies and high profile UK and African businesses. I expect it will be an evening event with cocktail dress.

Wishing the Duchess a very Happy Birthday!

On a side note, I've covered the news the Sussexes are stepping back from life as senior royals on my other blog. We'll keep the discussion on that topic over there. Many thanks.

Elvis Presley: The Top 100 Songs

Elvis Presley

image from goldderby.com

Singer Elvis Aron Presley was born 1/8/1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He died in Memphis on 8/16/77 of heart failure caused by prescription drug abuse. Often called “The King of Rock and Roll,” his role as the pioneering artist of the genre made him the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.

His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13. He began his recording career there in 1954 at Sun Records. On 11/22/55, he signed to RCA Victor in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who managed Elvis for more than two decades. In 1956, he starred in Love Me Tender, his first of 31 feature films. He served in the U.S. Army from 3/24/58 to 3/5/60. He married Priscilla Beaulieu on 5/1/67; divorced on 10/11/73. Their only child, Lisa Marie (born 2/1/68), married Michael Jackson on 5/26/94; divorced in 1996.

Six of his songs (“Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Suspicious Minds,” and “It’s Now or Never”) are featured in the DMDB book The Top 100 Songs of the Rock Era, 1954-1999. His Sun Sessions collection is featured in the DMDB book The Top 100 Albums of All Time.
