All Aboard For The RRS David Attenborough Ship Naming Ceremony

It was an afternoon in Birkenhead for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the naming ceremony of the UK’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

The appearance follows news William and Kate will undertake an official visit to Pakistan from 14-18 October.

I simply cannot think of a better name than the RRS Sir David Attenborough. It's rather perfect isn't it? Yet you may be surprised (or not if you're living in the UK) to learn it wasn't the first choice.There was quite the debate about naming the ship Boaty McBoatface. Where did that little gem come from you may ask. It all began when the National Environmental Research Council asked the public to choose a name for the £200 million research ship. The choice left senior officials ashen-faced and they elected to honour one of the country's living legends instead. RRS David Attenborough received the fourth highest votes, with RRS It's Bloody Cold Here just four hundred votes behind in fifth place. Tenth place went to RRS I Like Big Boats And I Cannot Lie.

One of Britain's national treasures, Sir David Attenborough has been a groundbreaking force with his environmental work and his documentaries; the Life series, which collectively constitute a survey of plant and animal life on earth. If you haven't seen it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's not only thought provoking and educating it's a visual masterpiece. It's available on Amazon. The natural historian recently collaborated with Netflix for a new eight-part series called Our Planet, which is top of my list one of these weekends. You might recall Charles, William and Harry attended the premiere. Have any of you seen it yet? The naturalist famously said: "I just wish the world was twice as big and half of it was still unexplored."

Sir David's connections with the royal family are many. We've seen the Duchess with him on numerous occasions in her role as patron of the Natural History Museum. During the opening of Hintze Hall, Kate quoted him in a speech in reference to the importance of experiencing the natural world: "Sir David Attenborough has famously talked about the fact that people will not protect what they don’t first care about, and will not care about what they have never experienced."

Kensington Palace said the ship "will enable world-leading research to be carried out in Antarctica and the Arctic over the next 25 to 30 years. Studying these remote regions plays a crucial role in allowing us to understand the changes in our planet’s oceans, marine life and climate systems. The ship will be available year-round to the UK’s research community."

William and Kate spent time with a team from Cammell Laird who have been involved in the ship’s build, including young apprentices. Founded in Birkenhead in 1828, Cammell Laird specialises in ship building, repair, refit and conversion as well as providing engineering services to the energy sector. They visited scientists who showcased state-of-the art equipment which is used to carry out research whilst at sea and in Antarctica. The Duke and Duchess also met schoolchildren involved in BAS’s ‘Polar Explorer’ programme, which encourages and supports schools to enrich their teaching of STEM subjects by educating pupils about polar science and the ship’s future expeditions.

During a speech, Prince William said:

'We are of course here to celebrate a true British marvel.

One that is strong, sturdy, and incredibly well engineered that deepens our understanding of the impact our behaviour has on the world around us, and arms us with the facts to do something about it, an icon capable of feats not seen before and potentially never seen again. And no – I’m not talking about you David. Those words wouldn’t do you and your lifetime’s work justice!

I’m referring to the hugely impressive ship behind us, named in your honour, that Catherine and I have just had the pleasure of looking around. The RRS Sir David Attenborough is a testament to the cutting-edge science and engineering expertise right here on Merseyside. It is also a testament to the UK’s world-leading role on polar research.

Through this state-art-of-the-art new ship, the British Antarctic Survey will help to expand global knowledge of the polar oceans, and the impact of climate change on this crucial region.

As last week’s climate protests the world over, and yesterday’s report on our oceans and frozen regions demonstrated, there has never been a more important moment for this ship to get to work. And there is no person more fitting for this beacon of scientific research to be named after than you, David. You have shown us how awe-inspiring the natural world is, and also how fragile and endangered it is. And you have inspired us all to do as much as we possibly can to protect it.
It is my immense privilege and relief to welcome Sir David Attenborough, rather than Boaty McBoatface, to speak.'

As the ship’s sponsor, the Duchess formally christened the ship and a bottle of champagne was smashed against the hull.

Kate said: "It gives me great pleasure to name this ship Sir David Attenborough and may God bless her and all who sail in her".

It is Kate's second ship naming. In 2013, when she was expecting Prince George, she christened Royal Princess in Margate.

The Duchess brought back her favourite cornflower blue Alexander McQueen coat with large pockets. It marked the fourth outing for the garment previously worn in Blenheim, New Zealand during the royal tour 2014, and chosen two months later for 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in Normandy. The Duchess also selected it for an RAF 75th anniversary event in 2016.

Kate wore her Emmy London Josie Nany block heel pointed court shoes.

In other royal news today, congratulations to Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi who announced their engagement today. The couple who began dating last autumn said: “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married. We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Beatrice's ring was designed by jeweller Shaun Leane who worked closely with Edoardo. The wedding will take place at some point next year. Another page boy and bridesmaid outing for George and Charlotte.

Kate's In Polka-Dots For Family Nurse Partnership Visit

An unannounced engagement for the Duchess of Cambridge this morning in Camberwell, South London, as she paid a visit to Sunshine House Children and Young People’s Health and Development Centre to meet with the Southwark Family Nurse Partnership team.

Kensington Palace said the appearance was organised to "highlight the valuable work" that Family Nurse Partnership do and to further Kate's research and engagement with the Early Years sector. They added: "FNP in Southwark is delivered by Evelina London, of which Her Royal Highness is Patron. As part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Evelina London is a major children’s hospital and provider of community services. From health visitors and school nurses to specialist treatment for children with long-term health conditions, Evelina London’s community services care for children and families across the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark." The Queen passed her patronage of Evelina London to Kate last December.

Following Kate's arrival, there was a very sweet moment when four-year-old Oliver presented the Duchess with a posy. Kate thanked him and asked him a question, he was feeling very shy and turned around toward his mother.

Kate caught up with Oliver and his mother Chloe later on during the visit.

Family Nurse Partnership is a voluntary home visiting programme for first-time young mums and families. It aims to ensure young women have a healthy pregnancy, reach their personal goals and helps to improve their child's health and development.

FPN is underpinned by an internationally recognised evidence base which shows the initiative improves outcomes both in the short and long term. Parents are partnered with a trained family nurse who visits them regularly until their child reaches two.

'Amina Deen, 23, from Elephant and Castle in south east London, spoke to The Duchess about the care she received. She was supported by the FNP team during the first two years of her three-year-old daughter Ramira’s life.

Amina said: “The Duchess was lovely and down to earth. She was very interested in Ramira and asked lots of questions about the support I received from the Evelina London FNP team and seemed very impressed by the service.

“When I was pregnant with Ramira, my nurse Debbie helped me find suitable housing.  When Ramira was born she would regularly visit us and we attended classes together at my local children’s centre. Debbie has constantly been there for Ramira and me. I feel very thankful for the support I’ve received from the Evelina London FNP team. It’s given me the confidence and knowledge to be an even better parent.”

It's been twelve years since FNP commenced their work in England. In 2017, they marked their tenth anniversary and a number of milestones including: The 1,000,000th FNP visit, The 30,000th FNP baby born, The 950th Family Nurse trained and the 200th supervisor trained.

'Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is delivered in around 80 areas across England. Each local team is made up of specially trained family nurse supervisors, family nurses, and quality support officers.

Like supervisors, family nurses are experienced, qualified nurses who undergo extensive additional training. They carry a maximum caseload of 25 clients.

Quality support officers are responsible for a wide range of administrative and data management functions. They work with the supervisor to ensure all client data it is up to date, and that relevant reports are compiled on time. Quality support officers also create and manage resources and work directly with a range of FNP stakeholders.'

The Duchess met mothers who have completed the programme and discussed how the additional support helped them and their children.

Kate heard about the strategic direction and development of the FNP programme in England from Ailsa Swarbrick, Director of the FNP National Unit.

Caroline Parr swiftly identified Kate's blouse as the Equipment Slim Signature Polka-Dot Shirt. The £270 piece is described as: "Cut from lightweight washed-silk, it has a slightly loose fit and curved hem that looks especially cool styled half-tucked."

Caroline also suggests Kate wore the £29.99 ZARA Culottes. The high waisted, wide-leg pair with size zip fastening appear to be a match.

Kate wore her trusty Gianvito Rossi Piper block heel shoes.

Kate accessorised with the same gold drop earrings she wore last Tuesday for her visit to RHS Wisley.

It's been widely suggested they are a sold out £5 Accessorize pair. They are incredibly similar, however Susan from What Kate Wore correctly noted subtle differences in the metalwork and spotted more intricate wirework in Kate's pair in her post last week.

Footage from Kate's visit to RHS Wisley last week featured with an update on the competition Kate launched on the show in June to encourage children to get involved in Back To Nature by designing a sculpture to feature in the permanent garden.

Easy Beef Stir Fry! With ginger and scallions and a honey soy marinade

The best thing about stir fries?

They come together so quickly!

In this ginger beef stir fry we marinate strips of beef sirloin in a honey soy marinade, then quickly fry them in a hot pan with julienned ginger, red chilis, and sliced garlic.

A cornstarch slurry helps keep the beef strips from drying out and helps create a tasty glaze over the meat.

Thinly sliced scallions are stirred in at the end, and the whole thing is served over rice. Fast, easy, and tastes great!

The trick to a good stir-fry is working with a very hot, relatively stick-free pan. I say relatively stick-free because you don’t want one of those stick-free pans with the coating that peels off, but say more like a well-seasoned wok or a cast iron frying pan.

Hard anodized aluminum will work too, as its surface is bonded into the pan and can take high temperature cooking. Cooking on high heat allows you to get a good sear on the meat and vegetables without overcooking them.

Ginger Beef Stir Fry Recipe

Prep time: 15 minutesCook time: 10 minutesMarinating time: 30 minutesYield: Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS

Marinade

2 Tbsp unseasoned rice vinegar

5 Tbsp soy sauce (use gluten-free soy sauce if cooking gluten-free)

1 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp peeled, grated fresh ginger

1 teaspoon chile pepper flakes

1 teaspoon ground cumin

Beef and stir-fry

1 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 lb top sirloin steak

1 Tbsp cornstarch

2 Tbsp vegetable oil (preferably peanut)

1 Tbsp dark toasted sesame oil (optional)

3-4 green onions, cut on a diagonal, 1/2-inch apart, including the greens

2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

2-3 hot chilis, preferably red serranos, seeded, sliced

1-inch nob of ginger, peeled, cut lengthwise into matchstick shapes

1/2 cup loosely packed, chopped cilantro

METHOD

1 Chill steak, slice into strips: Chill the steak in the freezer for 30 minutes before you slice it, this will make it easier to cut in thin slices. Slice the steak first crosswise in 1/2-inch thick slices. The cut each slice lengthwise into strips.

2 Marinate the beef: In a medium bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients; the soy sauce, vinegar, grated ginger, honey, red chile flakes, and cumin. Mix the beef in with the marinade to coat and let it sit for at least 30 minutes, and up to 4 hours, in the fridge.

3 Make cornstarch slurry: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to make a slurry.

4 Brown the beef strips: Heat the oil in a wok (vegetable oil plus dark sesame oil if using), or a large sauté pan, over high heat until it is nearly smoking. As the oil is heating up, pat the beef dry and separate it into small batches no larger than what can fit into the palm of your hand. Working in batches, sauté beef until just brown outside but rare inside, no more than 1 minute. Transfer beef to a bowl.

5 Stir fry chiles, garlic, ginger: When all of the beef is cooked, put the chiles and garlic into the pan and stir-fry 30-45 seconds. Add the julienned ginger and cook for 30-45 seconds more.

6 Add beef, cornstarch slurry, scallions: Add the beef back to the pan. Add the cornstarch slurry. Add the scallions and mix everything together. Cook for 1 minute.

7 Remove from heat, stir in cilantro: Turn the heat off and mix in the cilantro. Serve at once with steamed white rice.

2.  In a medium sized bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and spices. Set aside.

3.  In a smaller bowl, stir pumpkin, milk, melted butter and vanilla together to combine. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix to create a thick batter. Pour into a small 8-inch casserole dish with high sides.

4.  In a separate bowl, stir sugar, brown sugar and pecans together. Spread over the top of the batter evenly. Pour hot water over the entire thing {WITHOUT STIRRING A THING!} and bake for 40 minutes or once the middle is set. {Be sure to place on a baking sheet incase it bubbles over.} Cool 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve with more pecans and vanilla ice cream.
